Ultrasound Imaging

An ultrasound (sonogram) exam is a painless, non-evasive diagnostic technique that we offer in our clinic. Instead than radiation, the sonogram emits sound waves so it's even safer than X-rays. The sonogram has been used for decades and has not been associated with any risks. The ultrasound exam involves a device, called a transducer, that sends out a beam of traveling sound waves to be able to reflect images of what is going on inside your body. When sound waves are reflected back to the transducer (by the boundaries between organs and tissues in the path of the beam), it is then conveyed as a digitalized image on a screen.

Reasons for an ultrasound exam:

  • View the bladder.

  • Measure the emptiness of the bladder in milliliters (mL).

  • Guide a needle for biopsy or tumor treatment.

  • Find genital and prostate problems.

Ultrasound can help our urologists diagnose a wide range of medical issues, including:

  • Abnormal growths, such as tumors or cancer

  • Blood clots

  • Urinary retention

  • Kidney or bladder stones
